The SolJAMM apps: ways to play, learn, and teach with the seven colors.
The SolJAMM apps: ways to play, learn, and teach with the seven colors.

SolJAMM is a free set of browser apps for learning music with seven colors, one for each scale degree. The same colors mark the notes on the fretboard, the keyboard, tab, and notation, so a learner sees one consistent map wherever they look. The apps turn ideas from my notation research into everyday practice tools for students, teachers, and workshop groups.

The apps

  • Practice room: colored tab, notation, and fretboard for etudes or your own MIDI and Guitar Pro files, with looping and slow-down.
  • Jam tracks and Jam board: solo over backing tracks, or loop a progression on a big screen for a whole group with the current and next chord in color.
  • Fretboard and Scale finder: any scale in any key on guitar, bass, ukulele, or piano, and every one of the 352 scale patterns within an octave.
  • Ear trainer: intervals, scale degrees, chord functions, and cadences, answered in color.
  • Chord Builder and Chord colors: how every chord is built, then practiced as a game with eleven levels.
  • Fret Notes and Fret Sudoku: learn every note on the neck, then place the missing notes on a partly filled neck, from open position to the whole fretboard.
  • Tab editor: write exercises as tab and notation, and share them on a contributor page.

From research to practice

The color system builds on my research on colored notation and learning aids, from my dissertation work on learning to read music and Jam Tabs to the NSF-funded Embodied Symbol Systems study. Because the apps are free and run in the browser with nothing to install, workshop participants can use them on their own devices during and after a session.
