Music Rehearsal Increases the Perceptual Span for Notation
Investigating the role of rehearsal in perceptual and visual span (data analyst).

Skilled musicians read scores more efficiently, but does rehearsal itself widen how much of a score a musician can take in at a glance? This study measured the "perceptual span" for musical notation across repeated rehearsals.
Highlights
- Skilled musicians initially showed a slightly larger span for challenging passages (5 notes vs. 4).
- Spans grew incrementally in both groups, and skill differences disappeared by 20 rehearsals (a span of 11 notes).
- Improvements in perceptual span correlated with performance speed, suggesting perceptual learning drives early gains in rehearsal.
