Abstract

Music is a connecting force. It blends the nuances of human expression and culture, enabling autotelic, social interactions. Music can move us to dance, or to cry, it is uniquely present in all cultures, and is a celebration of our shared social humanity. Musical improvisation and social musical play have been practiced for thousands of years, among almost all cultures, throughout human history. I aim to leverage newfound knowledge and technologies to imbue new music experiences with social musical play and carry forward values of connection to others through music. During my PhD I would like to answer three research questions in the following ways: 1) identify the role of technology in music improvisation, 2) identify investigations that may be well positioned currently to support musical improvisation, and 3) create and evaluate systems that push the boundaries of technology and musical improvisation. Throughout this paper I outline a framework within which I position my work, explain how past projects forward my aim, and seek feedback from the NIME community.
