Hacking DAWs: Custom Functions in Ableton
Custom Ableton functions connected to Python and other programs, used in teaching and performance.

I build custom functions in Ableton Live and connect it to Python and other programs. These techniques power many of my research systems and performances, and I have taught them in courses.
Where it’s used
- AI-driven virtual musicians: Python models generate MIDI that flows into Ableton through virtual ports and Max for Live (Virtual AI Jam, XR Jam).
- Audience performance: Ableton controlled from Python and OSC in Rhythmic Conversations and CrowdForge.
- Mixed reality: a Python server driving a shared Ableton session in MR-DAW.
- Quantum Music: quantum circuits built with IBM’s Qiskit writing phrases into Ableton through AbletonOSC.
- Teaching: I have taught these techniques in courses and music technology workshops.
